This slideshow shares some of our cruising experiences in the Gulf Islands, Howe Sound, and Desolation Sound aboard our Catalina 30, Someday, and other boats. Through photos and stories, I’ll highlight favourite anchorages, memorable sailing moments, and some of the practical aspects of cruising these spectacular coastal waters. It’s a look at the beauty, variety, and enjoyment of exploring the BC coast by sailboat.

Rigging day and then go for lunch as a group
April 4, 10 am
This marks the start of the sailing season in the dinghies (small sailboats without a heavy keel). We spend about two hours turning boats over after being stored upside down, putting masts on, making small repairs. Having lots of fun.

Happy hour seminar “The Fun of Dinghy Racing” Sun April ???, 3-4pm (Date to be announced)
Content: Racing dinghies (Laser, taser, Albacore, Hobie 14, Hobie 18, etc.)
Overview and a few strategies such as start line basics & tactics, boat handling in traffic, simple handicap scoring.

Club Fun Race Day for Dinghy’s (5-6 boats potentially)
Sun May 16, 12-3pm
Objective: To have fun racing all our dinghies at the same time.
Leaders: Andre Guyot, Jason Winks, William McNeel Caird
Social: BBQ or Pizza and refreshments on the beach
Jericho Sailing Centre Open House
Sat May 23, Noon -4pm
Task: Set up a table and BBQ so visitors can see what Discovery Sailing Club is about.
Possibly set up a 2nd table outside the complex fence by the parking lot so walkers get exposed
as well.
Objective: Sign up new members. (offer to take people on a dinghy tryout sail after signing a
waiver). Offer novice membership rate and 20% discount at Mac Sailing

June 2026
Tuesday Night – Dinghy Racing begins
Tue June 9 onward, 6:30-8:00pm
Content: weekly social racing; Compete against other sailors include one short skill drill each
evening.
Pre-race lesson: starting line setup, time -on distance-, conservative vs aggressive starts.
Windward and leeward mark roundings, inside/outside positions, basic upwind/downwind
strategy.

Social: Galley or the beach
July 2026
Evening Seminar: “Upwind Racing Trim & Tactics – Someday”
Wed July ??, 7-9pm (Date to be announced)
Content: rig tune overview, jib and main trim for height vs speed, simple upwind strategy for
short courses.

Evening Seminar: “Downwind & Mark Roundings – for Cruisers –
Someday”

Content: controlled gybes, poled out headsail or spinnaker basics (if applicable), clean leeward-mark rounding.

sequence, simple tactics; short on water-water demo.
