2006 Message from our Commodore

For those of you returning in 2006 to Discovery here's what going on...

Rigging Day was held on Saturday April 8.  2006. Many thanks to Mary B, Karyn R, Mark P, Laura W, Mark Br, Mark V, Mike Barnes, Lorn W, Ira C, Ian B David C, David S, Anthea H, Dierdre W, Irene S, Tom B, Ken C, and Francious T (you will notice that there are a few new names on this list. Our brand new members for 2006 joined in to help on our rigging day - what wonderful spirit!)

Mary B has stepped up and is secretary this year.  Attached is a list she has put together of the Committee and contact information along with maintenance that needs to be done with names attached of who will head up the projects.  If there is any other work that anyone knows of that should be added to the list, contact Mary.  She plans to update the Maintenance log with this information.  Also attached is the Maintenance guidelines that all members should follow.  Remember this is a Co-operative club.  It's up to every member to participate in the up-keep of the club and its equipment.  You will notice that many of the same names are doing a lot of work for Discovery.  We really need to spread the work more evenly so that everyone can enjoy their time sailing rather than working.  If you didn't manage to make it to rigging day, maybe you can find time to help out with some maintenance for the club.  Call some of the names and find out how you can help.  No experience is necessary, just willing and enthusiastic participants.  If  Maintenance is not your style, help Helen with the training.  We could use someone to help organize orientations for our many different boats.  No need to know how to sail them, just help to find someone who is the expert of a particular boat and organize mini training parties.

The Club has some news!  The Discovery Sailing Club is now a proud owner of another Hobie 16 (this makes three Hobie 16s for the club) - Purchased from Erin O'Connor for $1,350 (cost of what I paid for it).  Discovery is also a proud owner of an Aluminum sailing dinghy (similar in size to the bomb) ? Purchased from an ad with the help of Ken Christie.  To fit this new ALCAN dinghy, we are removing from duty the Bombardier in the poorest condition.  So, we will have two functioning Bombardier remaining and a durable sailing dinghy.

Some more exciting news.... The three single kayaks have been moved to the east end of the Jericho storage yard and have new homes metal kayak racks.  So very easy to reach!  And the double kayak has been moved to a lower rack so that it is easier for our members to access it.  To find out the exact locations, go to the Jericho office with your ID tag.

A reminder for members to submit their membership dues, which are now overdue!  Members how have paid can receive their JSA ID cards in the Jericho office. This card is mandatory when in the storage areas of the yard and building.  The plus side of the club is that it comes with the new Wind line phone number and it also gets you 10% off on food and draft beer in the Galley!
Well I think that's it! ~ Happy sailing everyone.~  See you at Jericho soon!~

Some Gentle Reminders

Hello fellow DSC members,

As we get into the height of the season, here are some items of interest from your humble training coordinator…..

TAKING CARE OF BOMS

Problem: We have been having problems with centreboards getting stuck in the "up" position. The cause seems to be sand inside the rubber gasket on the bottom of the boat. There are two ways to avoid this problem.

1. Don't pull the the boats up on the beach. Launch them, sail them and haul them out on the dollies. When returning to the beach, turn parallel near the shore rather than running straight up on the beach.

2. Use the hose to force water down both sides of the centreboard case when you derig the boats. This will help to wash out any sand that has got in there.

Drain plugs have a tendency to go missing so please remove them after using the boats and keep them in the pocket taped to the wall above the Bom slots.

3. When putting Boms away, be very careful not to hit the rudders of the catamarans stored behind them. One was damaged recently and cost us $150 to fix. Also make sure the boats are sloped backwards so that rain water will drain. One tire under the stern and three under the bow is the best way.

4. When rigging the Boms, make sure you get the main as high as you can to avoid "boom droop" an ugly disfiguring disease that can result in loss of performance and head injuries!

  1. Before leaving the beach, check to make sure you have a paddle and a bailer on board
  2. .

Happy sailing!

Erin

Dear Members.

Commodore Erin's Messages for 2005

Our club has grown and the boats are getting a lot of use which is all very good, but please remember to be careful of the boats when launching and de-rigging to avoid damage and loss of our property. We should accept that a certain amount of damage will happen with normal wear and tear of the boats, but let's all work toward keeping this to a minimum. Please continue to set the example for Beach etiquet on those crowded weekends.

Good sailing.
